Transgender Civil Rights Advocates

In the past few years, California Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA) has finally caught up with other aspects of housing and employment law and now recognizes that transgender individuals are entitled to protection of their civil rights too.. Unfortunately, that does not mean that transgendered persons are confronted much less by discrimination and harassment, but at least now there are remedies where they didn't exist before. At our firm, The Dolan Law Firm, our GLBT rights lawyer-advocates fight for the rights and dignity of transsexual people.

Employment Rights

If you are a transgendered person who is facing discrimination or harassment in your place of work, you may have a claim under The Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA) for damages.

If you are plagued with harassment in the workplace, you may have a cause of action not just against the people harassing you, but against their supervisors, the company that employes you. Don't put up with unlawful conduct; contact us today to talk about the situation.

If your employer has terminated your employment or changed the terms and conditions of your employment because of you are a member of the LGBTQ community or other protected classification, you may have a claim under FEHA for damages.

You also have a right to reasonable accommodations such as access to appropriate restroom facilities.

Housing Rights Neither a landlord nor real estate sellers, including agents and brokers, may discriminate against you if:

  • You change your name.
  • You begin to dress in a manner that conforms to your sexual identity.
  • You start to take hormones that are appropriate to your sexual identity.
  • You undergo a sex change operation.

Healthcare and Insurance: An even more recent law was passed to protect your rights against discrimination by health insurers or health care providers. In addition, if you are a City of San Francisco employee, you may even have the right to have your operation paid for by your health insurance.

Commercial Establishments : As with sexual orientation, your right to services from businesses is also protected.

If you have been experiencing any discrimination or harassment based on transgender issues, our office invites you to contact us for a thorough evaluation of the situation and guidance on how to proceed.
